Most of the time, all we have to do to keep our cars running is routine maintenance. But cold temperatures mean taking more precautions.
Make sure all fluids are filled accurately. For those who use just water as a coolant, now is the time to use antifreeze.
Check your batteries. Its cranking power is reduced by half when the thermometer dips near zero. If your battery is weak, replace it now. Don't wait for it to go dead.
Check your oil. Oil thickens in winter which can make your engine sluggish. Your owners manual will tell you the proper type for your car, but generally, anything with a "w" in the name is suitable. "W" stands for winter.
Make sure your radiator and heater hoses don't have cracks or leaks. Replace them if they won't bend to the touch.
And finally, give yourself some extra time to warm your car up. Do not sit in your car with the engine running if its parked in a garage or closed in area. Poisonous gasses can seep into the car.
