Obama Urges US To Honor King By Serving Others

»  Comments | Post a Comment

WASHINGTON (AP) - President-elect Barack Obama is appealing to the nation that he will soon lead to honor slain civil rights leader Martin Luther King by making a commitment to serve others.

On the eve of his own inauguration, Obama issued a statement Monday saying that King's life was lived in loving service to others.

Monday is the federal holiday commemorating the birthday of King, and Obama was leading a day of community service.

"As we honor that legacy, it's not a day just to pause and reflect - it's a day to act," Obama said. "I ask the American people to turn today's efforts into an ongoing commitment to enriching the lives of others in their communities, their cities, and their country."
