Should the digital conversion be delayed? Some in Washington are saying yes

Shoppers looking for digital televisions at Savannah's Best Buy

You've been hearing for months that TV is changing on February 17 and that you have to get ready for the digital conversion. Well now, maybe not. Some in Congress want to delay next month's transition. There's concern that many people may not be ready for the delay, specifically those with older televisions with anaolg signals.

Many with older televisions, like the elderly and low income, have been applying for government coupons to buy converter boxes. But now, most of the millions set aside for the coupons has been used and the Feds still have a waiting list of more than 2 million people.

Last month, President Obama indicated he thought the conversion should be delayed. Now, there's a bill set to be debated in the U.S. Senate to push the conversion back to June 12.

We found quite a few folks at Best Buy in Savannah who think a delay would be a mistake. "Let it happen now the longer they wait I think it's gong to be worse for everybody," Ricky Miller told me. He and his wife and two daughters were out shopping for a new digital TV. "I think a delay would just make it more confusing. They've been preparing for this thing for over a year now they get right down to the last month and now they want to wait six more months I think that's ridiculous, people have had plenty of time."

Still, some who applied for coupons months ago and have yet to receive them might disagree with Miller. The $40 coupons could help many put a big dent in the price of a converter box which were about $60 at Best Buy.

Gregg and Gloria Broadstreet say they actually got two coupons in the mail recently after waiting quite awhile. So, they understand that others may still be waiting. Gregg says he doesn't care if they delay the transition. "No, whatever they need to do to help people is fine with me," he says.

Still, Miller wonders if delaying the conversion will solve anything or just create new problems. "They've spent tons of money preparing for it, they've had everybody preparing for it for over a year," he told me. "Let's get on it with it. You know it's just another situation where we get right to the end of it and now we're going to delay it some more."
