A Savannah firefighter suspected of killing a bicyclist in Bluffton on Christmas night was indicted Thursday by a Beaufort County grand jury.
The grand jury indicted Ryan Cudlip, 29, on charges of hit and run involving someone’s death, which carries a sentence of up to 25 years and a fine between $10,000 and $25,000. No parole is allowed on that charge.
Cudlip was also indicted on an involuntary manslaughter charge, which carries up to five years in prison.
Cudlip was headed east on the Bluffton Parkway when he allegedly struck 37-year-old bicyclist Rosember Lopez-Martinez, Bluffton police investigators have said.
Lopez-Martinez was pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators have determined he was traveling along the side of the roadway and not on the adjoining paved bike path.
Authorities were led to Cudlip through the help of eyewitnesses and citizen tips. He turned himself in to police on Dec. 28.
Another court date is scheduled for April, when prosecutors will set a trial date.
