Fewer may be taking to the roads this holiday

Kevin Smith fills up near Savannah as he takes a break from his holiday trip

There are plenty of cars, SUV's and RV's on I-95 today but some vacationers we talked to think there are fewer travelers than last year. "Not as much traffic as I expected," Kevin Smith tells me. Smith is returning to Jacksonville from a trip to New York. "I expected more cars, I really did," he says.

Paul Conroy, a teacher from Massachusetts, says the same thing. "Traffic was heavy on the East Coast but I don't think it's really that much here," he says.

Conroy also told me that among his friends and family back home, he is one of the few taking a trip this holiday. "Yeah, most are just staying put."

Ranell Williams from Savannah though says he is taking several trips this summer. We caught him with a vehicle packed to the brim with bags, children and in-laws. "I am making up for other people who aren't traveling," he laughs.

Everyone we talked to did tell us that even though they're taking a holiday trip, they're trying to spend less this year. They're staying fewer nights in motels and packing lunches so they can spend less in restaurants. More on News 3 at six.
