Savannah-Chatham Metro Police investigate a traffic accident on I-16.
Just before 4:30 p.m. this evening Metro Police responded to I-16 eastbound between 516 and the 37th Street Connector on a report of an accident with injuries. Officers arrived on scene to find a silver Cadillac wrecked along the guardrail and a brown Toyota Camry flipped on its driver’s side. The driver of the Cadillac and four occupants in the Toyota were transported to Memorial Medical Center. All four occupants of the Toyota are being treated for what is believed to be non-life threatening injuries. The driver of the Cadillac is being treated for a medical condition believed to be life threatening.
Metro Police Traffic Investigators and Forensic Technicians responded to the scene. Police are in the early stages of the investigation. Police believe both vehicles were traveling eastbound on I-16 when the Cadillac made an abrupt lane change in front of the Toyota causing the driver of the Toyota to lose control of the vehicle. Police believe the driver of the Cadillac was suffering from a medical condition at the time of the accident. At the time of this release police do not know if the two vehicles collided with one another.
I-16 eastbound between 516 and the 37th Street Connector remain shut down as police investigate the scene of the accident. All lanes of I-16 westbound remained open.
