Miley Movie: Church Scenes & Tybee Island Firefighters

» 0 Comments | Post a Comment

Cast and crew members of the new Miley Cyrus - Greg Kinnear movie, "The Last Song," continued shooting Wednesday on Tybee Island.

The production didn't tie up areas of the south end of the island by the pier, but rather, barricaded off several blocks of the western portion of the island.

As News 3's Randi Hempel shows us, it's still drawing attention and giving some locals a chance at making the big screen.

Streets leading to the area where the church is for "The Last Song" may be blocked off, but the barricades aren't stopping some from trying to catch a glimpse of the action, even if they're on a "laid back" vacation.

"Everybody was telling us Tybee Island. Miley Cyrus was filming. So, we thought, lets rent some bikes and bike down to where the filming is going on and see if we could get a shot of her," explains Lori Johnson, who’s visiting from Ashville, N.C.

Lori Johnson, who's visiting from North Carolina with her husband, isn't the only one who had that idea. The young and young at heart all stand, waiting anxiously.

The folks who gathered probably won't see too much Wednesday, because I'm told, most of the filming will be inside. Friday night though was a different story when it looked like the church was on fire because of special effects and pyrotechnics. The Tybee Island Fire Department was on hand to stand by and some of the firefighters even have a part in the movie.

"It was wonderful. I will tell you the whole cast and the crew, Greg Kinnear couldn't have been more accommodating. All we basically had to do was lay him down and get the mark right every time and that was kind of difficult to do because it was dark and our masks were fogged up,” explains April Moore, a Tybee Island firefighter.

"It was pretty unique. We didn't really know how it was going to work out. They just had an idea of what the scene was supposed to be and then we just ad-libbed it," says Todd Smith, a Tybee Island firefighter.

While most will be looking for Miley Cyrus, Greg Kinnear and Kelly Preston in the movie, April Moore, a lifelong Tybee neighbor, knows who will be looking for her.

"My mom and my God daughter are going to be thrilled to see me in this movie and it's all of about 8 seconds so don't blink your eyes,” Moore and I laugh.

Officials tell News 3 that Tybee will be back to normal for a few weeks.

The cast and crew will be leaving the island to shoot at Wormsloe Plantation and a few other locations for two weeks.
