Tough economic times are hitting every level of government. At this morning's city council workshop, the assistant city manager gave a rundown of where they're falling short on funds., pointing out the sales tax revenue is volatile.
News 3's Randi Hempel was at today's meeting, tweeting the information as it was discussed.
In January and June, they were negative 17% and in April, the sales tax revenue was negative 27%.
The city also fell short in several other departments. Te hotel-motel tax fell to the same as the 2006 numbers, before we had all of the new hotels.
Officials say it's because of the economic crisis, but that they're hoping the new children's museum, Ellis Square and the fort will turn it around.
The auto rental tax is also below target. Building inspections are more than a million dollars below budget, partly because they don't charge an inspection fee for the school systems new buildings and renovations.
There was good news too though. Water and sewer fees are above the June target.
Diesel fuel usage is also down, saving close to $700,000.
Salaries are also above target because there are so many vacancies for city positions. Officials say they will redistribute those positions where they're truly needed when the budget rolls around in October.
Right now, the budget is off by $1.2 million, but that too will continue to be adjusted.
