Savannah-Chatham County school officials are looking for community members who want to be involved in the learning process. SCCPSS is introducing an eMentoring program called In2Books to fifty 3rd-5th grade classrooms this fall. District officials say they need pen pals to read books and correspond with students over the course of the school year.
With the new In2Books eMentoring program, students and pen pals will read five books and then discuss the book in communication via email. Officials say this new program will foster reading, writing, and critical thinking skills.
The district is looking for 800 participants to help make this new program successful. Just a few hours per month is all that is needed to help the students with this project.
Here’s how the program works:
1) At the beginning of the school year pen pals will be matched with a student and will exchange “getting to know you” letters via the In2Books website.
2) The student will select his or her first book, and the pen pal will be notified by email what book they need to read. Pen pals can purchase the book or find it at a local library.
3) Next pen pals will write an online letter to their student about the book. Pen Pal Place, the In2Books website dedicated to pen pals, will provide instructions, tips and examples to get started.
4) Once the teacher has approved the pen pals’ letter, the student will read it and respond back.
5) The process is then repeated for the next four books.
