SAVANNAH, GA (July 22, 2009): Just before 11:30 last night, Metro Police were called to a home in the 1300 block of East 51st street on a report of a burglary in progress. A neighbor had called 911 after hearing a noise and looking outside, spotting four people climbing through a window of the home. The neighbor stayed on the phone with the dispatcher until officers could arrive. Responding officers took all four suspects into custody despite some of the suspects attempting to run from police. Arrested are 17-year-old Anthony Ramone Harris, 17-year-old James Lee Ellis and two juveniles, ages 16 and 13. All four live in Savannah. Harris was charged with Burglary and Giving a False Name to Police. Ellis was charged with Burglary and Obstruction by Fleeing. Both Harris and Ellis were taken to the Chatham County Detention Center.
This incident marks the recently in which an alert citizen made all the difference. Less than 24-hours ago another alert citizen noticed his neighbor’s house was being broken into after hearing a noise. In that case, police arrested three suspects and the recovered all of the victim’s property. Metro Police say it's this type of working partnership with the community that will reduce crime. Criminals look for easy targets known to law enforcement as Crimes of Opportunity. If a criminal knows a neighborhood is close knit and everyone looks out for one another’s property the criminals are more likely to pass the neighborhood up. Police say these are excellent examples of how citizens can take a stand against crime and work with law enforcement to better their community!
