Savannah, GA
Dr. Thomas Lockamy, Superintendent of Savannah-Chatham Schools must now work to cut $4.2 million from the district's already tight budget.
On Tuesday, Governor Sonny Perdue had a conference call with all of the superintendents across the state. At that time he told them that a $900 million hole must be filled by cuts to public education across the state. He told superintendents that they must cut their budgets even more. For Savannah-Chatham, the 3% cut means another $4 million must be cut from the budget for the next school year.
In addition to cutting state funding for school districts, they're now looking at furlough days, days off of work without pay.
The Governor says every state agency must have their employees take three furlough days. Dr. Lockamy says it's a little trickier with the school districts because teachers and other district employees have contracts with the school districts, not the state. Lockamy says if it's found legal for the Governor Perdue to mandate the cuts, all district employees will have to take three furlough days by December 31st. Lockamy says central office staff, including himself, will take five furlough days.
