145 pairs of eyes were focused on the skies above Savannah Country Day's football field this afternoon as a US Coast Guard helicopter circled closer and closer before landing on the field.
The children were in awe of the aircraft, called a Dolphin, because of its shape.
A 9-year old, Ericka, told me she'd never seen a helicopter, especially that close.
The Coast Guard came to talk to the kindergarten - 7th graders about their jobs, water safety and rescues.
The students are in the Horizon program, a 6 week summer camp for children from low income households. In the camp, they learn reading, writing and math in the mornings and have activities in the afternoon. Camp executive director, Gail MacPhearson, says the students have swimming three days a week and that one of the camp's goals is to bring knowledge to the children about the water, its dangers and how to swim so that when they go to the beach or pool they're not afraid and they will be safe while swimming.
The camp provides field trips, art classes, physical activities and a place for kids to be kids. MacPhearson is thankful for the donors who provided the $99,000 to fund the camp, giving the children a summer of fun and learning instead of just hanging out in their neighborhoods.
Horizons provides breakfast, lunch and a snack for the children in the afternoon.
