COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — The South Carolina Supreme Court has heard arguments in two lawsuits seeking to force Gov. Mark Sanford to accept $700 million in federal stimulus cash.
Chief Justice Jean Toal says the court expects to make a decision in the next two days.
School officials are looking to the Supreme Court to say the Legislature can require the governor to request the federal money.
Toal told Sanford's lawyer, Adam Charnes, the state's constitutional process had been followed. She pointed out Sanford expressed his opposition, the General Assembly passed a law requiring him to accept the money and overrode his veto of that law.
Sanford had said he would request the $700 million only if lawmakers used the money to pay down state debts, something they refused to do.
