Update: Battery Creek Swim Restrictions

Large raw sewage spill still causing problems. Restriction area has now been reduced.

The swimming advisory for Beaufort County's Battery Creek has been reduced but still covers a sizeable area. An advisory has been up since Monday when a large amount of untreated sewage from a clogged manhole spilled into the creek.
The Department of Health and Environmental Control says the area has been reduced by about half. It still ranges from Deer Island across to Cottage Farms north to the headwaters.
Water quality samples are being taken regularly and, of course, the advisory will remain in place until those samples indicate acceptable water quality.
The raw sewage spill happened near the Cross Creek Shopping Center in Beaufort.
