SCCPSS: Last Day of School Fun & Festivities

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Friday is the last day of school for more than 34,000 Savannah-Chatham County students.

We're the last district in the state to end the school year.

In today’s education report, News 3 education reporter, Randi Hempel and photojournalist, Calvin Knowles show us, it's a time to celebrate for the young ones and showcase their talents outside of the classroom.

Fifth graders dance, sing, tap dance, read in German and so much more. It's all part of 5th Graders Got Talent at Jacob G. Smith Elementary School.

"We've seen a whole bunch of cool stuff that we always wanted to do and we just tried and copied it and put it in our own version and then just did it,” explains 5th grader, Joseph Washington who performed a dance to “Rock Your Body” with a friend.

"It was pretty fun to battle like cause we've always been friends since like kindergarten,” adds Deondre David, Washington’s friend and dance partner.

And the competition was complete with Randi (assistant principal, Tamika Wright as Randi Wright), Simon, Paula, Kara and “Miss” Seacrest, played by teacher, Christi Bethune.

"The kids are talented so we wanted to show everyone what the students here at Jacob G. Smith could do besides read and do our math, we have great talent,” explains Assistant Principal, Tamika Wright.

"The students who were up there are the ones who are so quiet in the hallways they do what they're supposed to do and you would never suspect that they have that in them and they get up there and they just show it off and it was awesome,” adds teacher, Christi Bethune, who was “Miss” Seacrest.

"We really didn't follow any kind of practice, we just kind of felt along with the music and let the beat just go and we did it,” continues Washington.

"I love the Beatles so and I had that particular song stuck in my head," says 5th grader, Sophia Morekis, of her tap dancing routine. "I just started choreographing to it."

"Usually we have a lot of fun so it was pretty cool to do this because we don't like do this very often at Jacob G. Smith and I think we're all going to remember this,” adds Grace Repella, a 5th grader who performed a Taylor Swift song.

The 5th graders performed for the pre-k students, their "reading buddies". After the talent show, the students were treated to a picnic.
