Injured SC suspect who fled GA hospital returns

AIKEN, S.C. (AP) — A wounded suspect who walked away from an Augusta, Ga., hospital while on a smoke break returned to the facility and is now being guarded by South Carolina and Georgia deputies.

Multiple media outlets report that doctors will determine when 40-year-old Terrance Riley can be released to police. Riley was spotted at the emergency room Tuesday after leaving the facility over the weekend. It's not clear if he planned to surrender.

Aiken County Sheriff's Capt. Troy Elwell says officers did not initially guard Riley because they thought he was near death and the Medical College of Georgia didn't tell police that his condition improved.

Deputies think Riley was accidentally shot while helping three others kill 34-year-old Jerry Tyler on Friday.
