When most of us think of vacation we think of something relaxing...but for one group of students they think of the exact opposite.
Across the country this summer thousands of high school and middle school students are spending their summer helping others.
As News Three’s Community Reporter Alice Massimi found out Savannah is a recipient of their hard work and big hearts.
For two summers now you're more likely to see Ashley Knight wielding a hammer rather than a beach towel.
A volunteer with World Changers she spends her summer volunteering.
“It’s an opportunity to share God's word and for just going out here and doing some mission work and stuff,” says Ashley.
Ashley is a ninth grader from Rocky Mount North Carolina. She is one of nearly five hundred teens spending two weeks in Savannah.
Her first time working on a roof, she's says it's fun and actually exciting but does admit it's also hot and hard.
For fourteen years now World Changers has been coming to Savannah, they've worked on more than 1000 homes just in our area.
“These students’ lives have been changed by Christ and they just want to share the love and they have a real desire to be a part of something big and World Changers provides that for them, “ explains Halley Claudel also a volunteer.
Of course at the same time they're helping others.
“The homeowners are so grateful. Most of them couldn't afford to do this on their own so they are so appreciative and so eager to get to know the students and just provide whatever they need,” adds Claudel.
Ashley says it feels good and thinks that it's the least she can do.
“You need to go out and help others and do stuff like that for them.”
One nail at a time these teens are changing neighborhoods and changing lives.
All of the supplies are donated by the City of Savannah. The city gets the money from federal grants.
