Miley Cyrus Movie: What Stays on Tybee?

»  Comments | Post a Comment

If any of you have been on Tybee Island in the last few weeks, you've noticed quite a different sight around the pier.

Last week, there was a carnival set up. For the last few days, volleyball courts have been on the beach.

As News 3's Randi Hempel explains, many are asking, are they for us to use? It has the wheels turning for city officials.

The volleyball tournament on Monday is all part of Miley Cyrus' new movie, “The Last Song,”

“I think it's a great. It's a film that everyone is going to see nationally or internationally. It's a small inconvenience. I think the volleyball courts being there is a nice thing. Hopefully it's going to be permanent,” says Craig Rohrbaugh, who’s visiting from Orlando with his family.

"It would be fun to have something to do when you get here, cause we come here all the time so it would be fun to have something to do," says 13-year old Kaitlyn Taylor.

While it's obvious that the nets are set up for the movie shoot today, many came over the weekend with volleyballs in hand, hoping to get in a few games and they couldn't. They have the same thing in common though with those who know it's for the movie. They all want the nets to stay.

"More than anything these folks have given us some great wonderful ideas about what we could do for the future for Tybee to keep here. So we have approached them about the possibility, of perhaps keeping some of the stuff that they've put down here maybe the volleyball courts or some other things,” says Mayor Jason Buelterman, City of Tybee Island.

“Seeing that carnival made me realize what it was like years ago when we had the little carnival on Tybrisia Street. My daughter and I, who is 21 now, walked down there with me and she went, oh mom, I remember what the carnival was like. I would love to have this again something that families and kids can hang out and do, especially in the evenings,” says Natalie Gordon, owner of the Atlantis Inn.

"I think if anybody was down on the beach, the nights that they had the lights turned on when down for they had the little amusement park set up, "if there was any way to do that, it sure would be nice, even if it was just for a week or two. I know there are permitting issues. It certainly gave all of use a lot of ideas about how we can improve Tybee, even if it's just for a couple of weeks during the summer,” continues Buelterman.

The mayor says the city already discussed putting volleyball courts on the beach since there's more space, after the renourishment project last fall.
