The city of Richmond Hill is looking for a few good mne, and women. The city will host a picnic June 13 in J. F. Gregory Park to honor all surviving World War II veterans.
"Their numbers are dwindling every day. They have done so much for our country. In our country's darkest hour, these brave men and women gave everything they had. It just seems right to honor them," said Richmond Hill Mayor Richard R. Davis.
City officials say they are looking for as many World War II veterans as possible to attend and encourage the veterans to attend in uniform, if possible.
"We have seen some of these veterans at our Memorial Day and Veterans Day ceremonies and want to do something special for them," said city manager Mike Melton.
"We have quite a few retired military member working for our city, so many of us understand the sacrifice and dedication military members show every day, although World War II veterans set the standard for that," the city manager said.
Melton said the city will be working with local veterans organizations to identify local World War II veterans and invitations will be sent to them requesting the honor of their presence at the picnic.
The day's festivities will also feature World War II-era music and displays. The picnic will be held in the park's pavilion, which provides a panoramic view of the nearby Veterans Monument. Veteran organizations are asked to survey their membership rolls and encourage any World War II veterans to contact the city for more information.
