Some people are saving big money on their home insurance by calling their local police department and insurance agent.
That’s because a security home inspection can save you money on your homeowner’s insurance.
Mike Bedrich of the Southlake, Texas Police Department thinks like a criminal.
He gives homes the once over before the bad guys do.
"They're going to look for an open door, they're going to look for an open window. They're easy access in, they're easy access out," said Bedrich.
The free home security inspection can save some hundreds of dollars on their homeowner’s insurance.
State Farm offers a five percent discount to those who pass the inspection.
"In today's economy, we're finding more and more break-ins, more and more thefts, and if people have their windows and doors all fixed up according to this discount we can apply, then it's just better for us, as well as the policy holder," said Dan Sweeney of State Farm Insurance.
Not every city offers the home inspections.
But in those that do, local police will check dead bolts, windows and garage doors.
The inspection takes less than an hour.
Time well spent for big savings and peace of mind.
"You can feel confident that you can go out of town, you can go to dinner and not have to constantly worry that you're gonna be the victim of some type of crime," said Bedrich.
