SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) - A former sheriff wept as he pleaded for
mercy before a federal judge who sentenced him to one year and a
day in prison almost six months after he pleaded guilty to charges
of bank and wire fraud.
U.S. District Court Judge William T. Moore Jr. also ordered
three years supervised release, 150 hours of community service,
restitution of more than $9,000 and a $5,000 fine for Jimmy
Boatright, who was sheriff of Jeff Davis County for 16 years.
On Monday, Moore ordered Boatright to report to the prison
system on April 15.
An FBI investigation found that Boatright had taken ownership of
a pickup truck seized in a 2003 drug bust and bought a TV for his
home with money that was meant to go to a children's drug education
program.
