SAVANNAH, GA (March 18, 2009): For some 177 people, St. Patrick’s Day celebrations meant a visit with Savannah-Chatham’s finest. SCMPD released its final arrest totals for the weekend and St. Patrick’s Day this morning.
In total, 176 arrests and one outstanding warrant arrest were made. Of that total, 86 came from activities starting yesterday afternoon to the early morning hours of Wednesday, March 18. The Prisoner Processing Center on River Street processed 120 arrestees, while the City Market post processed 56. Of the total arrestees, 10 were juveniles and 27 military personnel. Only 14 felony arrests were made, 20 City Ordinance, and the bulk, 142, Misdemeanors. Police transported 125 persons to the Chatham County Detention Center, seven were taken to court and eight released to Military Police.
One woman was arrested shortly after the parade for DUI after speeding down Broughton Street and hitting a police barricade. On Saturday night, police arrested a convicted felon after he got into a fight with another person and pulled a gun. Police recovered the firearm as well.
The most popular charge over the past five days was Disorderly Conduct (43), with Urinating in Public (31) and Underage Drinking (26) rounding out the top three charges. Police arrested one man for Forgery (counterfeit money), two people for Aggravated Assault, and six juveniles for Entering Autos (2 counts each) on Tuesday afternoon. There was only one No Wristband infraction.
The most unique charge of the festival goes to the man who was arrested and charged with the City Ordinance “Swimming Prohibited in Certain Areas” after he took a dip in the Savannah River just after 11:00 p.m.
