Local authorities are investigating a fuel spill in the Wilmington River that may have come from a leaking boat. The problem was reported shortly after 1:30 p.m. They say the leak may be near the Thunderbolt Marina.
Thunderbolt Fire, Savannah Fire, Chatham County Emergency Management, and Savannah Hazmat were at the scene as they tried to locate the source of the leak. Officials say there's a smell of fuel in the air and that some of the fuel may be accummulating under docks at some condominums along the river. The U.S. Coast Guard and Georgia Environmental Protection Division is investigating the cause.
A boom is in place to contain the spill.
Chief Carl Smith from the Thunderbolt Fire Department confirms the spill is diesel. He says he's unsure how much may have spilled, but he believes it could be anywhere from 10 to 40 gallons.
Crews are in place to watch for fire dangers.
"We have notified all the marinas and the docks about not doing any kind of work with welding machines or anything to try to keep any kind of flame or spark away from any of the fuel or vapor that's coming off the water," says Smith.
