Bank Robbery Investigation

Savannah-Chatham Metro Police are investigating a bank robbery which occurred just after noon today at the Heritage Bank on Stephenson Avenue.

A man walked into the bank about 12:10 p.m. with a black ski mask and yellow gardening-type gloves. He hopped the counter and began stuffing money into his pants pockets. He fled the scene without saying a word or producing a note or a weapon. The man is described as a white male with a medium build, about 5’8” tall, wearing a black shirt over a white t-shirt and blue jeans.

Police swarmed the area and followed up several tips from citizens. Memorial Day School, BC School and the YMCA were advised to lock down for a short time while police searched the neighboring community for the perpetrator. At this point, the suspect is still at large.

Lawrence J. Greene, Supervisory Special Agent, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Savannah office requests public assistance with identifying the person who today robbed the Heritage Bank branch located at 620 Stephenson Avenue at approximately 12:10 p.m. The robber was reported to have entered the branch an immediately vault the teller counter. The robber then began removing currency from teller drawers before he fled the bank on foot.

Initial reports indicated the robber may have been a passenger in an older model, late 1980s-early 1990s white pickup truck which sported large side-view mirrors. Witnesses described the robber as a white male, likely in his 20s, 5'8-5'10", athletic, with curly brown hair. The robber was also wearing a black mask, black long-sleeve shirt, black & yellow work style gloves, black tennis shoes with white stripes, and blue jeans possibly carpenter style.
