Jerry Bland from Bland's Tree Service did his best. Around noon Tuesday Bland came to Morgan Bridge in Long County to try and rescue a cat that's been stuck in a tree for the past few days.
"I'm going up in this," he told me from inside the basket on his boom truck. The plan was to lure the cat with food as Bland got close to the tree. But the frightened animal panicked and jumped from the tree, falling into the water. The cat was able to swim to another tree about ten to twelve feet away. The animal then climbed into that tree.
Debbie Calicutt watched in desperation. She and her daughter, along with a small group of concerned animal lovers, have been at the bridge every day trying to get the cat to safety.
"We've named him Noah," she tells me. That's because the cat is perched high on a tree which stands in Morgan Lake.
Debbie looks around at an overcast sky. "I am so afraid it is going to rain," she says. "Then what will Noah do, he'll be cold and wet. He may start jumping around again."
The group isn't giving up and is trying to think of something else to do. Bland has promised to come back and try again, if someone can think of anything else to try. "Of all the agencies and everyone else we called, he is the only one who responded," Debbie says.
