The Board of Directors of Memorial Health announced today that it has voted to enter into contract negotiations with Phillip S. Schaengold, J.D., M.B.A., FACHE, to become the next president and chief executive officer of Memorial Health. Schaengold is a veteran healthcare executive with more than 25 years of senior leadership experience, primarily at academic medical centers and safety net hospitals like Memorial Health. It is anticipated that Schaengold will join Memorial in late May.

Phil currently serves as senior vice president for hospital affairs for State University of New York (SUNY) Upstate Medical University and CEO of University Hospital, a 378-bed academic medical center associated with the university. SUNY University Hospital averages 17,000 patient admissions, 52,000 emergency room visits, 200,000 outpatient visits, and has 3,500 employees. At University Hospital, he led the process of a $140 million expansion and renovation that will include a new 70-bed children’s hospital.
He was selected to lead southeast Georgia’s only teaching and research hospital following a six-month, nationwide search that yielded more than 150 candidates. The search committee narrowed the field to 11 qualified individuals for face-to-face interviews, and from these meetings, identified six candidates for additional consideration. Schaengold was chosen from the field of six.
