In a couple of months these apartments will bring some relief to Savannah's homeless problem. This is the future Dutchtown Campus Apartments exclusively for homeless people with a disability. Known as permanent supportive housing the spacious attractive apartments will be run by Union Mission. Letitia Robinson is overseeing the project. he says it's been tough to fit in affordable housing here. "Our shelters are increasingly cannot meet the demand. We're limited on capacity. One of the things that we're trying to do is projects like this that directly target homeless individuals and families," says Robinson. Rent will be based on 30 percent of their income. There are 48 units here including 1, 2, and 3 bedrooms. No worries for tenants they will get to stay as long as they want to. "When families move into these particular apartments they will not have to move again. This will be their permanent home and because this is a new facility a new construction project they will be the first ones to ever live in their apartment," says Robinson. What's more impressive people who will call Dutchtown Campus Apartments home will have everything they need to support their disabilities and help them become successful.
“We will have a satellite healthcare center provided by our J.C. Lewis Healthcare Center. We will have employment and training center services here. We will have counseling services, we will have a crisis unit here." Robinson says more than 100 people have applied to live at Dutchtown Campus Apartments. Construction is expected to be completed by the end of May. The 5.1 million dollar project is funded by Georgia State Department of Community Affairs, The City of Savannah, and Private Donations.
