This Saturday, May 9th at 9:00 am, the Savannah Local Food Collaborative (SLFC) and its partners will open a seasonal farmers’ market at the south end of Forsyth Park. The Forsyth Farmers' Market (FFM) has joined forces with the 2 year old Starland Farmers Market and will be the new home for those food vendors. FFM will feature regionally grown, fresh food and food products sold by the producers.
Grace Badiola, the Fitness/Wellness Instructor for St. Joeseph’s/Candler’s African-American Health Information & Resource Center, will present a free lecture on the role of fresh fruits and vegetables in nutrition at 10:00 am and again at noon. Amy Schuster will be conducting a free workshop about vermicompost (using worms to compost) at 11:00 am. There will be a meeting for people interested in community garden efforts following the second nutrition lecture, facilitated by Kelly Lockamy. The first 50 customers will receive a free reusable shopping bag compliments of Thomas & Hutton Engineering Co.
The FFM will have organic and conventional farmers with a variety of produce and will be capable of accepting food stamps. Many of the farmers will also be capable of accepting WIC vouchers from customers. The focus of this market is primarily on offering the entire community access to healthier food and educating people about that food.
