Savannah-Chatham Metro Police are attempting to better inform the public - both pedestrians and motorists - about laws governing crosswalk safety. The department is launching an operation this week to bring awareness to the responsibilities of drivers and persons using crosswalks. By week's end, there will be targeted enforcement in areas downtown.
WHAT: Crosswalk Awareness and Enforcement Campaign
WHEN: Tuesday, May 12, 2009 at 2:00 p.m.
WHERE: Crosswalk at Oglethorpe and Abercorn (on grassy median)
WHO: SCpl. Sean Wilson, Operation leader
Lt. Mike Wilson, Downtown Lieutenant
BACKGROUND:
SCMPD has already handled approximately 30 pedestrian-involved incidents this year. Although most incidents do not occur in crosswalks, the recent tragedy involving a visitor to our city, brings attention to the importance of crosswalk safety. Police are taking time to remind both drivers and pedestrians of the laws and right-of-way rules when it comes to crosswalks, before embarking on a Crosswalk Enforcement Operation that will start on Thursday, May 14 and will run through the weekend in the downtown area.
