The storms we’ve had since last weekend are making their presence known on Tybee Island. Tybee Island Ocean Rescue lifeguards say they’ve seen about 2 feet of erosion in some areas under the pier and 2-3 feet of erosion at the south end of the island. The tides even moved a lifeguard stand on the south end 500 feet toward the south channel.
With the rough conditions we've seen out on Tybee there is a good chance of being caught in a rip current.
If you do ever get caught, here's what you need to do: First, don't panic! Just swim parallel to the shore until you're out of the current. Then, swim straight to the beach. Remember you should always ask lifeguards about the water conditions before you go in. Never swim alone. If you're not a good swimmer or comfortable in the water, don't go in past your knees.
Coming up tonight at 11... I will have more advice from Ocean Rescue lifeguards on how you and your loved one's can stay safe while heading out to the beach this Memorial Day weekend.
