Some youngsters at Marshpoint Elementary School in Savannah have spent the past few months learning a little bit about democracy and a lot about their local government.
The students, whose school is on Whitemarsh Island Road, are concerned about the safety of ducks at a nearby pond. "There are some mothers and each one have a couple of babies," says Ellie Duffy. Duffy and her classmate, Sydney Doe (both are in the fifth grade) got support of other fifth graders and went to work. Their plan: to get a sign to warn motorists that ducks often cross on the road.
They contacted local officials and even emailed ones at the state level. They say one, County Commissioner Pat Farrell responded. Today, a plan "hatched" by the students a few months ago, came to fruition. Chatham County has installed a duck crossing sign by the school. More on News 3 at six.
