Savannah isn't the only city with a Veterans Monument in the works the City of Tybee is also in the process of honoring those who have served.
A project News Three’s Military Reporter Alice Massimi learned has become a labor of love.
Walk up to this and you couldn't know what it is, let alone what it will be, unless you're in the minds of Ronald Tatum and Jimmy Carter.
“Everybody that walks free this is their monument in tribute to veterans,” explains Carter.
To Tatum and his fellow Vietnam Combat Veteran Carter, it's the Tybee Island Veterans Memorial....The Circle of Freedom they dreamed up one night three years ago.
“We thought it would be nice if we could get together and build a nice monument to represent all the servicemen,” says Tatum.
A memorial to Veterans of every branch from every conflict since World War One, it's a design Carter worked on himself.
“There will be gold plaques on each side for each branch of the service and around the outside will be unit flags,” points out Carter.
The construction of the monument is slow going, they broke ground in December but money dictates the pace and dollar by dollar they're taking it step by step.
“We are going along with it as the money comes in we build,” says Tatum.
A true labor of love.
“You know I lost a lot of friends and to me these monuments are very emotional but a lot of the public might not feel as veterans do,” Carter says through tears.
Yet their hoping this memorial built on solid ground will become sacred ground to all.
They've already raised some money for the monument but need your help.
This Friday on the Tybee Pier they will be holding a benefit concert.
“The Tams” will be performing from 7-11.
If you can't make that but still want to help you can purchase a brick.
