Savannah's West Broad Street YMCA has issued a challenge. Starting June 1st, they will square off against Alpha Kappa Alpha and Delta Sigma Theta sororities in a competition for better health.
The battle begins with a "weigh in". Participants will then spend the next two months eating right, getting exercise, and learning about healthy choices.
Subsequently, there will be weekly weigh in sessions at the "Y" where team weights will be recorded. The percentage of loss dictates winners and losers. All weigh-ins will be conducted by community volunteers. "We are very happy to be a part of this friendly competition," says Peter Doliber, Executive Director of the West Broad Street YMCA. "Not only does it promote healthy lifestyles, it also allows us to showcase our facility which is undergoing renovation. One of the first things we have completed is a new fitness center thanks to the kind donations of community."
Along with the weight loss and fitness workouts, there will be weekly sessions on healthy choices, taught by community volunteers. A closing ceremony to celebrate the life changes among all the participants is scheduled for July 27, 2009 at the West Broad Street YMCA at 7 pm. There is no cost to participate in the challenge, but individual sorority members have committed to make a $5 donation to the Y.
