(ESTILL, South Carolina) Two adults were arrested and two juveniles petitioned following an altercation at Estill High School Friday. A school nurse also received minor injuries during the altercation and was transported to the hospital following the incident.
The two adults arrested included Virginia Juanita Wesley, 33, and Shantell Gardner, 19, both of Gifford. Each were charged with simple assault and disorderly conduct. The juveniles were transported to the Department of Juvenile Justice in Columbia.
The nurse involved in the incident, 57-year-old Jennifer Dawkins, was transported to Hampton Regional Medical Center for treatment. Dawkins was tentatively scheduled to return to work towards the end of the week.
The Sheriff's Office says the incident began when several students got into a verbal and physical altercation around 8:30a.m. while on campus at Estill High School. A juvenile attempted to assault another juvenile in the hallway.
When the juveniles were separated, they were able to begin fighting again before being taken into different areas.
Authorities say once the parents of the juveniles arrived on scene, they were very irate and uncooperative with law enforcement. One of the parents began hitting the main office door, demanding to be let inside although the office door had been locked due to irate students coming into the office.
Both the juveniles and parents continued to fight with one another until the school nurse called 911 for assistance for Student Resource Officer Justin Edwards. In the process, officials say the nurse was injured when one of the juveniles began swinging and pushing, trying to escape from officers who had responded to the call.
The Hampton County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the incident.
