Republicans swept the night's two big prizes.

Bob McDonnell won easily in Virginia, promising as Governor to create jobs.

"So that every Virginian can use their God-given talents to pursue the American dream and liberty here in this great commonwealth," said McDonnell.

Republican Chris Christie takes the top job in traditionally Democrat New Jersey.

"I stand here tonight full of hope for our future," said Christie.

Christie will take over for John Corzine, the incumbent billionaire who outspent him two-to-one.

President Obama had campaigned in Virginia and New Jersey, hoping voters who elected him last year would come out for the Democrats again.

Republicans say a year later voters are rejecting Obama policies.

Governor Haley Barbour of Mississippi said, "It is in fact a referendum on his policies."

In exit polls, voters said the President was not a factor.

Where Democrats claim victory today: upstate New York. Democrat Bill Owens beat out conservative Doug Hoffman for a seat in the U.S. House.

Hoffman had driven a GOP moderate from the race.

National heavy-hitters from Rush Limbaugh to Sarah Palin had weighed in to support him.
