For nearly 25 years, Savannah's Martin de Porres Society has been making the holidays a little brighter for those in need. This season, they're asking for your help to provide groceries and gift bags to hundreds of children and families in our community.
On Saturday, November 7th, the non-profit organization will hold its annual "Angel of Peace" sale. Proceeds benefit families that may be having a hard time during the holidays.
Last year, volunteers distributed gift bags full of food, clothes, and toys to more than 600 area children and 250 families.
The Martin de Porres Society was founded in 1986 by Dr. George and Yolanda S. Negron.
The namesake of the society, St. Martin de Porres, was born in Lima, Peru in the late 1500's. He was an outcast who developed a love and compassion for the poor. He established an orphanage and outreach facilities in Lima that are still in use today.
