Update 7am: One of the injured victims in yesterday's shooting at Fort Hood has died bringing the death toll at this point to 13.
The community of Fort Hood, Texas is mourning over the loss of twelve people killed and thirty-one wounded in a mass shooting by an Army Major.
Twelve people have died and thirty-one wounded in the shooting.
Thursday night officials confirmed that the shooter was not killed.
General Bob Cone of the US Army said, “Preliminary reports indicate there is a single shooter that was shot multiple times at the scene however he was not killed as previously reported.”
The gunman was identified as 39-year-old Nidal Malik Hasan.
Hasan is an Army Psychiatrist who received a promotion in July.
Military officials believe that the events that took place could have been worse.
“The quick reaction people are telling stories of the soldiers ripping their uniforms off and applying first aid. We put great emphasis on soldiers first aid and taking care of each other,” said Cone.
The military base was locked down for four hours while SWAT teams searched for other possible suspects.
Fort Hood is the largest base in the country, but tonight it is a place where families have come together.
Cynthia Wood from Fort Hood Texas said, “It’s a big community but you have to know someone that’s affected.”
“It’s amazing that soldiers are out there fighting for this country and then something like this happens,” said Adriana Peeples from Fort Hood.
The community is coping with the tragedy while the investigation continues.
