Holiday Mail for Heroes

Public signing cards for troops on Veterans Day.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Dozens of volunteers and passers-by are stopping by an American Red Cross building on Veterans Day to sign holiday greetings cards for U.S soldiers around the world and veterans.

The event in Washington kicks off a program called Holiday Mail for Heroes. A Defense Department policy requires that ordinary mail addressed to "any soldier" must be returned to the sender. But this program lets the public send holiday greeting cards that aren't addressed to a particular service member.

The cards will be screened, sorted and distributed to military hospitals and bases nationally and overseas as well as to veterans and military family members.

The public can send greeting cards through December 7 to Holiday Mail for Heroes, P.O. Box 5456, Capitol Heights, Md., 20791-5456.
