SAVANNAH, Ga. -- The holidays are a time to spend with family, but many of our military service members are far away from home at Christmas. The American Red Cross is asking for your help to bring holiday cheer to our veterans, and the organization is using some high-tech methods to get the word out.
Millions of cards will be mailed this holiday season. The American Red Cross hopes some of the cards you send will be addressed to our troops.
"This is our third year that Red Cross has been partnering with Pitney Bowes to send holiday messages to our soldiers all over the world," said Tina Hardy with the Savannah Red Cross.
Hardy said it's a way for everyone to give back to those serving our country.
"It's a touch of home. It's a way for them to know that what they're doing is important and that it is appreciated by the people back home and that we are standing with them and supporting them," she said.
To get the word out, the Red Cross is using the internet, YouTube videos, social media like Facebook and Twitter, and blogs.
"We just encourage people to just let everyone they know in their church group or in a civic organization that they belong to or just family and friends," said Hardy.
You mail your holiday cards to a central address and then they'll do the rest.
"Those cards would be screened by Pitney Bowes. They come down to chapters all over the country where volunteers sort them and then they are distributed to military personnel."
The Savannah chapter has requested 10,000 cards that will be sorted by local volunteers.
"They will be distributed to Wynn Army hospital at Fort Stewart and to veterans groups and to the soldiers that are still here," said Hardy.
Cards should be sent to Holiday Mail for Heroes, P.O. Box 5456, Capitol Heights, MD 20791.
Don't forget to sign the card.
All cards need to be postmarked by December 7. You can send multiple cards in one large envelope.
