Oatland Island Homestead Heritage Day

»  Comments | Post a Comment

It's was a trip back in time for those who headed to Homestead Heritage Day at Oatland Island Wildlife Center.

Children tried their hands at scrubbing laundry on a washboard, and making candles. Folks enjoyed tours of cabins at the 1830s era Georgia homestead and enjoyed homemade Brunswick stew and apple butter.

“They’ve never seen a wash board and how people used to wash their clothes or how they made apple butter in a copper kettle. So the kids are having a great time and the adults are having a great time too and there's stuff that adults are learning all the time,” explains Annie Quinting, a teacher at Oatland Island Wildlife Center.

Folks at Oatland Island hope to go back to a larger cane grinding event next year when the main building renovations are complete. If you would like to buy some apple butter that was made at Saturday's event, just stop by the gift store at Oatland Island, which is located off of Islands Expressway.
