President in China Tuesday

»  Comments | Post a Comment

Amidst more ceremonial visits and discussions today in China, President Obama took time to acknowledge China's role in helping the U.S. rebound from its worst recession in a generation.

He also looked to reassure America's largest creditor that budgets were tightening in the United States.

"A strategy where America saves more, spends less, reduces our long-term debt, and where China makes adjustments across a broad range of policies", said Obama.

Discussions between Obama and Chinese President Hu Jintao also centered on the nuclear programs of Iran and North Korea.

Today, President Obama prodded China to take a tougher line toward those countries and their reluctance to cease nuclear proliferation.

Another hot item discussed between the two world powers today, was climate change.

President Obama said the two agreed to various clean energy initiatives, despite China's ongoing resistance to binding emissions cuts.

Professor Peter Morici, Economics Analyst at the University of Maryland, is skeptical of just how fruitful these meetings will actually be.

"Barack Obama is not going to get much out of China because their leaders see it strictly in terms of 'What's in it for me?' and Barack Obama isn't offering them very much", Morici said.

Still leaving time to enjoy his surroundings, President Obama today toured the Forbidden City, before sitting down for a lavish state dinner.

So far, no concrete political wins for Obama from this visit, but aides say the differences felt between these countries would not be erased by one visit.
