SAVANNAH, Ga. -- With high unemployment and job losses, many Savannah neighbors can't afford a traditional Thanksgiving. One group is helping to put a turkey dinner on the table for some needy famlies.
On Monday, volunteers at the Savannah Baptist Center were hard at work, bagging a complete turkey day meal for families in need.
"Stuffing and peaches and macaroni and cheese and evaporated milk and tea and sugar and green beans and corn and marshmallows," said 11 year-old Taylor White.
All the food is donated for the Savannah Baptist Center to distribute.
Director Pearline Burns said they have seen a drastic increase in people needing food. "We're limited to what we can give out. It's not like it's open to the entire community. I wish we could but we don't have that much food," said Burns.
Several of the families include parents without jobs and children who don't get regular meals. Burns said a little boy who came in with his father was a heartbreaking example.
"He looks up at a me and says, 'What's that?' I said, "It's some food.' He looked at his dad and said, 'We'll get to eat tonight.' It's just, we see that because there's a lot of people," said Burns.
The volunteers from Skidaway Island Baptist Church donated 24 turkeys and their time to put the bags together.
"Make sure nothing gets smooshed because you know of course a family is going to be able to get this to have it for Thanksgiving," said Angie White.
The Thanksgiving bags from the Savannah Baptist Center will help about 50 needy families with their holiday dinner next week. The center also has a similar program at Christmas.
The Old Savannah City Mission will hold its annual Day of Great Thanksgiving on Saturday at Forsyth Park.
