HARDEEVILLE, S.C. -- Officials have released the names of the four people killed when a train and a car collided Monday night.

Jasper County authorities identified the victims as Jason Scott, 33, Nancy Ratliff, 27, Melissa Thomas, 35, and Taylor Arnsdorf, 12, all of Hardeeville.

Hardeeville Police Chief Richard Nagy said the arm rail was down when the driver went around it, trying to beat the train.

Amtrak officials said the collision happened around 8:50 p.m. and there were 15 passengers on board the 89 Palmetto, going southbound. We’re told there were also five Amtrak employees on board.

Officials said the maximum train speed through the area where the collision occurred was 79 miles per hour. It’s unclear how fast the train was going Monday night.

There is video of the crash, not yet released to media.
