The annual meal preparations and the long hours of work are beginning. TWednesday, Wiley McCrary of Wiley’s Championship BBQ, Brinson Clements and a team of volunteers began smoking turkeys for the Old Savannah City Mission’s 12th Annual Day of Great Thanksgiving. The event is Saturday in Forsyth Park (from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.)
Nearly 500 turkeys are being prepared this year. Jim Lewis, who runs the mission, says they're planning on serving up to 7,000 meals this year, a big increase from last year. "Let me say it this way - , we have fresh faces coming into the mission," he told me. "We have people who never dreamed they would be coming to a gospel rescue mission for help and in most of those cases, they're coming to supplement their food."
Lewis says throughout the year, they've had about a 25 percent increase in the number of people coming in for meals, food bags and other services.
He says people who still want to help with the dinner, can do so. "We need help paying for all this. The turkeys cost $15 apiece," he says. "So those who want to make a specific donation to us can know they are helping the community."
The 12th 12th Annual Day of Great Thanksgiving is scheduled for Saturday, November 21 in Forsyth Park. Meals will be served continuously from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.
