SAVANNAH, Ga. -- A somber gathering Thursday night, as loved ones gathered to remember the lives taken at the hand of another.
Savannah's most recent murder happened less than two weeks ago on November 7. Last year, Savannah had 26 homicides, and in 2007, the city had 25.
At the Chatham County Victim-Witness Assistance Program's 20th Annual Candlelight Vigil in memory of homicide victims, Lucinda Chisolm came to remember her son Everett.
"My son got murdered in May 20, 2003 and the person who did it has not been arrested yet," said Chisholm.
"We plan this just before Thanksgiving and Christmas and the holidays because the holidays are particularly difficult times for families who have lost someone," said Helen Bradley, Director of the Chatham County Victim-Witness Assistance Program.
People sharing the same tragic situation gathered at the Greater Gaines A.M.E. Church to honor their loved ones with prayer and song and to share their memories with others.
"He didn't know that morning he was getting up, that was the end of his life. I didn't know that. that was my only son," said one woman about her son, who was murdered in December 2008.
Friends and family then gathered in a circle and lit candles for their lost loved ones.
For Chisholm, the pain of losing her son is still difficult to deal with but sharing the grief seems to help, and she still holds out hope her son's killer will be found.
"My hope is whoever done it or whoever seen what happened will come forward with some information you know so that I can get some rest," she said.
If you couldn't make it to the vigil, the Chatham County Victim-Witness Assistance Program holds monthly support groups. For information, call 912-652-7329.
