(Savannah) Saint Joseph's/Candler's African-American Information & Resource Center marks 10 years of improving Health Care for minorities in Savannah. The AAHIRC provides free health screenings and seminars, free computer access and classes plus health literacy programs. Mattie Robinson says she weighed more than 200 pounds and had high cholesterol, but the center helped change her life. "I feel a whole lot better. I no longer have the cholesterol problem. I no longer have high blood pressure. I am doing well for 61." The African-American Information & Resource Center has served more than 88,000 visitors. "When we started only 40% of the African American community had internet access. Now that metric is a little over 60% so that's good. It's going in the right direction. We're still not satisfied though with outcomes. So that's the next phase in this journey," says St. Joseph's/Candler CEO Paul Hinchey. The health center is located at 1910 Abercorn Street.
