It was built by the community for the community, and today it will assume the name of a local man known for giving back to the community.
This afternoon, Savannah's West Broad Street YMCA will dedicate its new playground to the legacy of Mr. Benjamin F. Lewis.
A former Executive Director of the West Broad Street YMCA, Mr. Lewis was instrumental in developing programs for local residents to help them access assistance in achieving self-sufficiency.
His greatest passion, though was for the children. Lewis challenged the programs of his day and worked with other agencies to make sure their needs were met. Lewis died last year at age 87.
Last month, hundreds of area volunteers came together to build the new playground and community garden in a single day.
The 3,000 square foot play area was donated to the neighborhood through the Home Depot Foundation and coordinated by KaBoom!, a non-profit organization whose mission is to have a playground within walking distance of every child in America. The playground was designed by children living in the area.
