The City of Savannah is taking a look at the proposed budget for 2010. The budget is balanced as of now, with no layoffs, furloughs or increases in medical insurance. It is being proposed more than 100 positions be eliminated. Currently most of those positions are not occupied. No raises are also being proposed.
There are some reductions being proposed in funding certain programs but Asst. City Manager Chris Morrill says the community should not notice any changes in service. The biggest change being proposed is the consumption charge for sewer and water...which will increase the median household bill by about $1.65 per month. On the positive side there is no millage rate increase.
Morrill adds we are not out of the woods yet as all revenue is down. For the month of November sales tax is down 19.5 percent compared to the same time last year.
More details as they become available.
