Stay Safe While Driving During Wet Weather

The wet weather earlier today brought headaches to many who were backed up because of accidents or even a car that hydroplaned into the marsh along Islands Expressway. News 3's Randi Hempel has safe driving advice from police.

The heavy rain meant a slow go on the morning commute today and problems for some drivers, including hydroplaining. Do you know what to do if you have a scary situation on the roads?

Islands Expressway Monday morning was anything but normal for one driver. Her car hydroplained into the marsh. The driver was lucky. She was able to get out, but the car was submerged in water. The situation is certainly a scary one.

So, what should you do if your car starts to hydroplane?

"If you start to hydroplane and you're sliding, it's best not to lock your brakes up. You lock up the brakes and the car is going to continue in that direction, it'll just slide,” says Sgt. Anthony Gallo who’s in charge of the traffic unit with SCMPD.

Another scary scene is folks driving into high water. Sgt. Anthony Gallo with Metro's traffic unit, says you never know how deep it is and once you're in, the car's engine will flood.

Even if it's just rain, you still need to drive with caution.

"It's harder to stop on a wet surface, so cars are sliding into the back ends of other vehicles and stuff like that,” explains Gallo.

Many people may not know what to do if the power goes out and the traffic lights at intersections don’t work. What you need to do is come to a complete stop and that's all four ways. The person to the right then has the right of way.

There's one thing people must do when driving during wet weather.

"What we would ask is that everybody adjust their speeds accordingly. If the weather's bad, especially if it's raining hard, drive slower,” adds Gallo.

This may sound like a no-brainer, but some other safety advice includes staying focused on the roads. Don't get distracted by cell phones, children, pets or playing with the radio.
