Tybee Island Ocean Rescue lifeguards are off duty for the season, but they just rescued a swimmer off of Tybee Island's south end by the 18th Street jetties on Saturday afternoon. They rescued a 62-year old man from Arizona.
The Tybee Island Police and the Fire Chief, were on the scene, explaining the danger to the man.
Luckily many of the lifeguards were heading to the beach for an end of season party.
Chief Skip Sasser tells News 3's Randi Hempel that two off duty lifeguards raced into the water, swimming to the man who was about 300 yards off shore. The fire department was called out with their rescue boat and brought the man to shore.
Remember to read the warning signs and ask locals about the water conditions before deciding to swim. If you cannot swim, do not go into the water. Never swim alone. Always swim with a buddy and do not swim after dark or in stormy conditions.
